French TotalEnergies approves $ 1.2 billion renewable energy investment in Kazakhstan

Mirny Kazakhstan Renewable Energy Project

French energy company TotalEnergies has taken the final investment decision to invest $ 1.2 billion in the Mirny onshore wind and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Kazakhstan. Located in southeastern Kazakhstan, the project will combine a 1 GW onshore wind farm with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system, providing enough renewable electricity to supply approximately 1 million people.

TotalEnergies and its partners signed a Common Terms Agreement (CTA) with an international lending consortium, securing the financing framework for the project. The lending consortium includes the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Proparco, Development Bank of Kazakhstan (DBK), DEG, Societe Generale, QNB Group, China Construction Bank, and Standard Chartered.

Developed in partnership with Samruk Energy and KazMunayGas, the Mirny project represents one of Kazakhstan's largest renewable energy investments. Over its expected 25-year operating life, the facility is projected to generate around 100 TWh of renewable electricity, supporting the country's decarbonization goals, improving energy security, and increasing the share of renewables in the national energy mix. Commercial operations are expected to begin by 2029.
