Kazakhstan and China are advancing a major $ 1.2 billion investment project to build a new steel mill in Kazakhstan in partnership with China’s Fujian Hengwang Investment. The facility will expand Kazakhstan’s steel production capacity, support industrial development, and strengthen the country’s position as a regional manufacturing hub. With a planned capacity of up to 3 million tonnes of steel per year, the project is expected to meet growing domestic demand and create new export opportunities.
The steel plant will use locally available Kazakh raw materials, including iron ore and natural gas, to produce a range of steel products such as wire rod, rebar, steel for pipe production, angle steel, and section steel. The first phase of the project is expected to reach a production capacity of 1 million tonnes annually by 2027, with further expansion planned to achieve the full capacity of 3 million tonnes per year.
The project is expected to create around 2,500 jobs and contribute to the growth of Kazakhstan’s manufacturing sector. It also highlights the expanding cooperation between Kazakhstan and China in industrial production, infrastructure, and investment. By combining Chinese capital and expertise with Kazakhstan’s natural resources and strategic location, the partnership aims to increase industrial output, support exports, and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
