The Tengiz Gas Separation Complex (GSC) is a strategically important petrochemical infrastructure project being developed in the Atyrau Region of Kazakhstan. The project is being implemented by KMG PetroChem, a subsidiary of the national oil and gas company KazMunayGas (KMG), and represents a critical component in the development of Kazakhstan’s integrated petrochemical value chain.
The project involves the construction of a large-scale gas processing facility designed to separate and recover valuable natural gas liquids from dry gas produced at the Tengiz field. The engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPC) works are being executed by a consortium led by Italy’s Tecnimont, part of the MAIRE Group, in partnership with Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCIC).
With an estimated investment of approximately $ 2.7 billion, the facility will process up to 9.1 billion cubic meters of dry gas annually. The complex is designed to recover at least 98% of ethane, producing approximately 1.6 million tonnes of ethane and around 355,000–360,000 tonnes of propane per year. These products will serve as key feedstocks for Kazakhstan’s expanding petrochemical sector.
A key strategic objective of the project is to supply ethane feedstock to the Silleno Polyethylene Project (Integrated Gas Chemical Complex Phase II) in Atyrau, one of the largest polyethylene developments in Central Asia. By creating an integrated value chain from natural gas extraction to high-value polymer production, the Tengiz GSC will significantly increase domestic value addition and reduce Kazakhstan’s reliance on imported petrochemical products.
The project entered the construction phase in November 2025. The development is also expected to generate substantial local economic benefits through the involvement of Kazakh suppliers and contractors, with approximately 400 local companies participating in project-related industry forums and localization initiatives.
Completion of the Tengiz Gas Separation Complex is scheduled for the first quarter of 2029. Upon commissioning, the facility will become one of the most significant gas processing projects in Kazakhstan, supporting industrial diversification, strengthening the national petrochemical industry, and positioning the country as a leading regional producer of higher-value petrochemical products.
