Alatau: Kazakhstan's $ 20 billion city of the future

Alatau is one of Kazakhstan's most ambitious urban development projects and represents a major step in the country's long-term strategy of economic diversification, technological advancement, and regional development. Located near Almaty, the new $ 20 billion city is being designed as a modern, smart, and sustainable urban centre that aims to become a regional hub for innovation, business, education, and tourism.

Officially established in January 2024, Alatau was created through a presidential decree that transformed several settlements in the Almaty region into a new city. The project is strategically positioned near Kazakhstan's largest economic centre, Almaty, and close to important transport corridors connecting China, Central Asia, and Europe. Its location also places it near major infrastructure facilities, including the international airport and key road networks, enhancing its potential as a logistics and commercial centre.

The development of Alatau is expected to require investments of approximately USD 20 billion, making it one of the largest urban development projects in Central Asia. The city is planned to cover an area of around 88,000 hectares, making it significantly larger than many well-known global cities, including Singapore and Seoul in terms of territorial size.

The concept of Alatau is based on the principles of a city of the future, integrating advanced technologies, smart urban planning, environmental sustainability, and innovative economic sectors. The city is expected to be developed around several specialised districts: green district, gate district, golden district, and growing district, each serving different economic and social functions.

One of the principal objectives of Alatau is to become an international centre for innovation and technology. The city is expected to attract technology companies, research institutions, startups, and investors, creating a favourable ecosystem for entrepreneurship and knowledge-based industries. Authorities envision Alatau as a platform where digital technologies, artificial intelligence, financial innovation, and scientific research can develop in close cooperation.

Another important function of the city will be its role as a transport and logistics hub. Due to its strategic geographic location along major Eurasian trade routes, Alatau is expected to facilitate trade and strengthen Kazakhstan's position as a bridge between Europe and Asia. The city may play an important role in regional connectivity initiatives and support the country's growing participation in international trade and investment networks.

Sustainability constitutes another fundamental element of the project. Urban planners aim to incorporate environmentally friendly technologies, efficient public transport systems, green spaces, and energy-efficient infrastructure into the city's design. The project also seeks to address demographic and urban challenges facing Kazakhstan. Rapid population growth and increasing urbanisation in the Almaty region have created pressure on existing infrastructure and housing. Alatau is intended to provide new residential, educational, and employment opportunities, helping to redistribute economic activity and reduce congestion in neighbouring urban areas. The development of Alatau is planned to take place over several decades. According to current projections, the city is expected to be developed in stages, with major phases of construction extending until approximately 2050.

In the long term, Alatau is expected to become a major centre for business, finance, education, tourism, and advanced technologies. Its development reflects Kazakhstan's broader vision of creating diversified sources of economic growth beyond traditional resource sectors and strengthening the country's competitiveness in the global economy.
