Butadiene and Its Derivatives Production Plant Kazakhstan

The Butadiene and its derivatives production plant is a strategic petrochemical project being developed in the Atyrau Region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The project aims to establish domestic production of butadiene and high-value downstream petrochemical products, supporting Kazakhstan's industrial diversification strategy and the development of an integrated petrochemical cluster in western Kazakhstan.

The project is being implemented by Butadiene LLP, a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna Ondeu LLP, in partnership with China Tianchen Engineering Corporation, with technology support from Lummus Technology. The complex will utilize butane feedstock supplied from the Tengiz and Korolev fields to produce butadiene and a range of derivative products used in the tire, polymer, construction, and fuel industries.

The project is estimated to require approximately $ 900 million to $ 1 billion in investment, making it one of the largest petrochemical developments currently under implementation in Kazakhstan. The integrated complex is expected to have a total production capacity of approximately 305,000 tonnes per annum and is scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2028.

According to the latest project configuration, the facility will include the production of butadiene and downstream products, including approximately 60,000 tonnes per annum of divinyl-styrene synthetic rubber (DSSR), 40,000 tonnes per annum of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), and 40,000 tonnes per annum of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). The project is expected to create approximately 750 permanent jobs and generate significant socioeconomic benefits through technology transfer and the stimulation of downstream chemical industries in Kazakhstan.

The Butadiene and its derivatives production plant represent an important step in Kazakhstan's transition from an exporter of raw hydrocarbons toward the production of value-added petrochemical products, contributing to long-term industrial development, economic diversification, and the expansion of the country's petrochemical sector.
